Throughout the three years leading up to our field experience, I was able to learn about global education and how to bring the world to my students and help them and myself, see our impact and responsibility as global citizens. Having been at a school that had previously hosted teachers from Uruguay through the Fulbright program, I was able to see what an enriching experience that is. Being a guest in a foreign country and invited to participate in so many schools’ and communities’ routines, classes, ceremonies, dances, discussions, lessons, meals, and projects, I was able to see how unique each community is and cherish what made them special.

Additionally, it allowed me to reflect on how different my previous schools and communities were and how each have individual attributes I would be honored and excited to show to guests to those countries, states, cities, neighborhoods, and schools. It reminded me that schools are effective when educators and stakeholders are curious to learn about ways to improve and about the world beyond their doors, while always being reflective and responsive to the distinctive needs within our walls. By Colombians welcoming me into their communities, I was able to embrace the gift of global education, while also growing to understand what is unique in my own backyard. I will forever be thankful to the Fulbright Commission, IREX, our host teacher Yani, the Colombian students and teachers who welcomed us, and my school administrators for this incredible experience!
